WRC's Annus Horribilis

WRC's Annus Horribilis

I think everyone could do with a little less of 2020 now…?

So where did I go for twelve months? This blog just started gathering digital dust… Was I just practising extreme social distancing?

Truth is I was busy.

WRC became something that absorbed all of my time. Apart from my Real Job, I spent every available hour trying to find sponsors for the event so that it could be a success. I worked for about 7-8 months and finally I secured the big sponsors that would take the event to the next level. Of course, only weeks later lockdown would be announced, the Olympics would be canceled, and I would then spend weeks and months unpicking all of the work spent with Lena (Austrian organizer and Kasu club) to get the event organized.

It’s been some dark times.

I don’t think the pandemic has left any of us unscarred. Of course, I’m lucky I have my health. Not everyone I know escaped as easily.

We’ve all had to watch those death counts on the daily news, as this unseen plague move its way through societies that we thought were constant. Pain is all relative and it’s okay to grieve what you lost in your life personally. No matter how objectively small the loss was.

So that’s where I’ve been. Working hard to build something and then working hard to dismantle it.

Not having a date in my calendar when I could see my mahjong friends again really killed my desire to do anything more than the bare minimum to keep things ticking over. I’m not one of those lockdown kids who has emerged with lots of cool new skills, in fact, I think I’ve lost some in the period.

But I need routine again so I’m going to try and pick up this blog. I do love mahjong and I love sharing it with people. Looking back over this blog and I see in retrospect some of this content is useful. Perhaps needs some organization but that’s possible!

Anyway, we’re only half way through 2020! Keep those face masks on, kids. There’s still more to come.
